Future City is national competition featuring teams of three 7th and/or 8th grade students, one teacher sponsor and one engineer mentor. The teacher and engineer guide and advise students as they plan a city of the future addressing design and infrastructure. There are four parts to the competition. Each team will design of a city in SimCity 4Deluxe software, write a research essay (the 2009 topic is water), build a scale model of a portion of the city, and present their concepts and designs.

Middle Schools from around the state can register as a Future City School and send multiple teams to the regional competition. The winning team at the Georgia Regional Competition receives an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for National Engineer’s Week to complete for national raking and recognition.

In addition to the top five place team awards, the competition also will feature Special Awards supported by various associations and businesses.

Get involved! There are three ways you and/or your association or business can help make the Future City Competition a success.

When is Future City for 2010? - Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Southern Polytechnic State University.

Volunteer as an Engineer Mentor – Engineer Mentors support the team by providing guidance and advice to the students. We expect more than 100 teams from around the state to participate in the competition and each one needs an engineer mentor. Engineer Mentors work with the teams for an average of one or two hours per week. (Please see the attached current listing of teams that need mentors.

Sponsor a Special Award – Create a special award category (such as Best Engineering Design, Best Waste Water System, etc.). The Special Award will feature the name of your association or business. You may choose to provide a team of 3 judges to select the winning team and to present your award at the Engineer's Week Awards Ceremony.

Volunteer as a Judge
– Each of the four parts of the competition are judged by panels of individuals in the engineering field. Get a glimpse of the future as you help to select the winning teams.
